Reading the site

You can read AAT without an account. We do not run advertising pixels, visitor-tracking scripts, comments, newsletter sign-ups or embedded social-media players on this edition of the site. Images and fonts are served with our pages rather than loaded from third-party image or font services.

Our hosting provider, Cloudflare, processes technical information such as IP addresses and information about requests to deliver pages and protect the service. This is different from us building advertising profiles of readers. Our reason for using this information is our legitimate interest in providing a working, secure publication.

Cloudflare describes its handling of technical information, including its retention criteria, in its privacy policy. We have not set up a separate reader database or an archive of individual browsing histories.

Cookies and device storage

The AAT pages do not set cookies or use local storage to track you or remember preferences. There is therefore no optional-cookie consent banner in this edition.

Cloudflare may use security technologies when protecting the service, including a cookie if a security challenge is presented. This is not an advertising feature. Its cookie documentation explains the technologies used by its different services; the presence of a product in that list does not mean that AAT uses it.

If we introduce features that need consent, we will explain them and obtain consent before activating them. We will update this page when the site's use of personal information changes.

When you contact us

If you email us, we receive your address, the name you supply and the contents of your message, including any attachments. We use those details to respond, consider suggestions, investigate corrections and handle requests. Our lawful basis is our legitimate interest in corresponding with readers and running an accountable publication. Where we must handle information to meet a legal duty, we rely on that obligation instead.

You choose what to send. You do not need to provide information to read the site, but we may be unable to answer an enquiry without enough detail. Please avoid sending sensitive personal information unless it is necessary for the matter you want us to consider. Contacting us does not subscribe you to marketing emails.

We keep correspondence while dealing with the matter and any relevant follow-up. Once it is no longer needed, we delete it unless there is a continuing reason to retain it, such as documenting a published correction, resolving a dispute or meeting a legal obligation. In those cases, we keep only what is needed and review it when the matter or obligation ends.

Service providers and sharing

Our hosting and email providers process information as needed to deliver their services. Access to correspondence is limited to those who need it to handle the matter. We may disclose relevant information to professional advisers or authorities where necessary to deal with a legal issue or comply with the law. We do not sell reader contact information.

Cloudflare operates internationally, so technical information may be processed outside the UK. Its data processing addendum describes the safeguards for applicable international transfers, including standard contractual clauses with the UK Addendum. Contact us if you would like information about the safeguards relevant to your information or a copy of them.

Your choices and rights

Depending on the circumstances, you can ask to access, correct or erase personal information, restrict its use, or receive information in a portable form. You can also object to processing based on legitimate interests. Where we rely on consent, you can withdraw it. We do not use reader information to make automated decisions with legal or similarly significant effects.

We normally respond to rights requests within one month; if a permitted extension is necessary, we will explain it. You may also complain to the Information Commissioner's Office, the UK data protection regulator.

Following an external link takes you to a service with its own privacy arrangements. We use ordinary links to external music and other websites; their players and tracking code are not embedded here.
